What is zero trust? (In plain language.)
The old model was a castle with a moat. If you were inside the network, systems trusted you. Once an attacker got past the perimeter, they could move freely.
Zero trust flips that. No user, device, or application is trusted by default, not even inside the network. Every request gets checked every time, against an explicit policy, with only the minimum access needed for that task. Every access gets logged.
Executive Order 14028 directed federal agencies to adopt zero trust. NIST SP 800-207 defines the architecture. The CISA Zero Trust Maturity Model spells out five pillars (identity, devices, networks, applications and workloads, and data), each with its own maturity path.
